Frequently asked questions
How often should my horse be trimmed or shoed?
Most horses benefit from a trim or shoeing every 6 to 8 weeks, depending on their age, activity level, footing, and nutrition. Horses in active work or with specific hoof needs may require more frequent care to stay sound and comfortable.
What if my horse has hoof issues like cracking, lameness, or navicular?
I have experience working with horses facing a variety of hoof-related conditions, including navicular, laminitis, and conformation challenges. I can work closely with your veterinarian if needed and provide corrective shoeing or trimming plans tailored to your horse’s specific situation.
Can you work through behavioral issues during the appointment?
Absolutely. I’m comfortable working with horses of all temperaments. That said, if your horse needs to be trained to stand for farrier work, there is an additional fee of $100 to account for the time and handling involved.
Do you travel to remote or rural locations?
Yes. The first 30 miles of travel are included with the service. Beyond that, I charge a travel fee of $1.00 per additional mile. I’m happy to serve clients in rural or hard-to-reach areas—just reach out to confirm availability and logistics.
What should I do to prepare my horse for your visit?
Please have your horse caught, haltered, and in a clean, dry area before I arrive. If possible, give your horse a chance to relax before the appointment to make the process go smoothly for everyone.
Do you offer services for other animals besides horses?
Yes! I also provide trimming services for goats, cows, pigs, donkeys, mules, minis, and even dogs and cats. Rates vary by species, and I’m happy to offer package quotes for multiple animals during one visit.
Are aluminum shoes or therapeutic options available?
Yes. Aluminum shoes are available upon request ($35 additional fee), and I offer corrective and therapeutic shoeing based on your horse’s condition and vet recommendations. These services are customized for performance, rehab, or comfort.
Do you offer consultations or just trimming/shoeing?
I offer hoof health consultations to assess current hoof condition, provide care recommendations, and support long-term soundness. Consultations are ideal for new owners or horses with ongoing issues.
Can I schedule recurring appointments?
Yes. Clients may choose to book regular appointments every 6–8 weeks to maintain a healthy hoof cycle. I’m happy to set you up on a recurring schedule that works for both of us.
